在法律上，我們說某人有權做某些事，或享有某些權利，但需要先遵守某些規定，或符合某些先決條件，便會用到subject to這一說法。
比如說：
He may ask for an exemption subject
to the approval of the relevant
authority.
他可要求獲得豁免，但須經相關部門的批准。
Subject to的另一些說法如下：
(1) 以...…為前提
subject to the authorization of the company’s general meeting
須以獲得公司股東大會的授權為前提
(2) 在不抵觸...…的情況下
The
country will, subject to its law, comply with our request for judicial
assistance.
在不抵觸其法律的情況下，該國會順應我們的司法協助請求。
(3) 在...…的規限下
Subject to
this Ordinance, the Court may make an order authorizing the applicant to raise the request.
在本條例的規限下，法院可作出命令，准許申請人提出該項請求。
(4) 除...…另有規定外
Subject to any agreement between the partners, every partnership is dissolved by the death of any
partner.
除合伙人之間另有協議外，如有任何合伙人離世，合伙關係即告解除。
