That means: we should not try to get something which we think might be better but will lead to the risk of losing everything we have.

若要捕捉林中的鳥，便會無法牢牢緊握現時手中的鳥，而手一旦鬆開，手中的鳥飛走了，林中的鳥卻不一定可以抓得到。

它的寓意是：我們要滿足於手上既有的東西，而不要冒險追求看來較好，但卻最終可能令你一無所有的東西。

So, it's better to have the certainty of a small thing than the possibility of something greater which may come to nothing.
